Early this morning, a Behavioral Sciences student from the University of the Philippines Manila (UP Manila) committed suicide. She was not allowed to study in the University this semester as she was not able to pay her tuition fees completely last semester. Recently, the University Administration imposed a “no late payment” policy which mandates students to apply for forced leave of absence (FLOA) if they could not pay their tuition fees within the specified time of payment. This was the reason why she ended her life.
The entire UP studentry mourns the death of a fellow Scholar. Education is a basic right of the citizens. It is not a privilege. Justice for Kristel! No to repressive university policies!
Requiescat in pace.
*’Iskolar ng Bayan’ (Scholar of the Nation) is the nickname being given for the University of the Philippines students.
